6 Best Hairstyles for an Oval Face

cutting hair on a client with an oval face

If you have an oval face, consider yourself lucky. An oval face is considered the most versatile when it comes to hairstyles because it’s so perfectly proportioned: longer than it is wide, with a jawline that’s slightly narrower than the hairline. The only concern with choosing a hairstyle for an oval face is that we don’t want to distract from that perfect symmetry. Instead of softening sharp angles like we do on a square face, or adding height to the crown like for a round face, the goal of your hairstyle should be to keep your facial shape just the way it is.

There are only two things our stylists recommend avoiding if you have an oval face: Blunt bangs, which can shorten the face and make it look more round; and long, straight hair which can elongate the chin. Other than that, you have your choice of flattering styles that will accentuate your beautiful features.

Haircuts that Look Great on an Oval Face

During a detailed consultation, our stylists at Vakkar will recommend styles that will look great on you and fit your lifestyle. However, since some clients like to consider haircut ideas ahead of time, we’ve listed several popular hairstyles for an oval face.

  1. The Pixie Cut

A short pixie cut accentuates the eyes, lips, and cheekbones, so why not put your best features center stage? Pixie cuts are easy to style with just a bit of pomade to add shine and control to the fringe, but they do require trims about every four weeks to keep their shape. And keep in mind that while hair always grows back, a super short cut like this will take around six months to transition into a bob style.

  1. The Classic Bob

This timeless style usually hits just below the chin, which accentuates the perfect jawline on an oval face. It suits just about any texture and adds subtle movement to straight hair. It can also be pulled off with curls or waves. To keep the style looking fresh, ends should be trimmed about every four to six weeks. For low-maintenance styling, air dry with a leave-in conditioner for a beautiful, effortless look like this.

  1. The Lob

A long bob, or lob, is a sophisticated style that fits any oval face. Stopping the lob at the collarbone creates the illusion of width to balance the longer chin and showcase your gorgeous facial structure. It can be worn straight or with beachy waves, and trims every six to eight weeks will keep its shape.

  1. The Tousled Shag

For a fun, airy effect, we can create lots of short layers to frame the face. The shag adds volume and texture to the hair and can be changed up with highlights for even more dimension. The great thing about oval faces is that you can pull off just about anything, so your layers will look great even while growing them out.

  1. Shoulder-Length Waves

When hair gets past the shoulders, it tends to draw the face down and make it look longer, which is what clients with oval faces usually need to avoid. But waves in shoulder-length hair add volume and draw out the cheekbones to accentuate the oval shape. This flattering cut offers easy day-to-day styling that can be dressed up with a blowout or kept casual by air drying.

  1. Curtain Bangs

While you should avoid bangs that cut straight across the forehead, curtain bangs that cascade into the rest of the hair help to add width to your face for a better balance up top. What’s even better? Perfectly parted curtain bangs form a beautiful natural frame around an oval face.

For easy day-to-day styling, part them and let them air dry. Or for a more done-up, sophisticated look, use a round barrel brush to blow dry hair back away from the face. Add a touch of smoothing serum to eliminate flyaways, and you’ve got a gorgeous look that appears totally effortless.

The Goal for Oval Faces When it Comes to Makeup

Since you don’t need to focus on trying to change the shape of your face with makeup, the goal is just to bring out the angles that are already there. Emphasize the cheekbones with a bronzer, and then use blush on the apples of your cheeks. As for applying makeup to the eyes and lips, you only need to highlight one or the other. So if you go for smokey eyes, just use a nude lip gloss. If you apply darker lipstick, use a more subtle mascara. You’ve got plenty of natural beauty. Be sure to let it shine through!
